The Story of Leah Alter

The World Club of Odesites hosted the one-woman play “The Story of Leah Alter,” performed by actress and director Olena Shavruk.

This profound and emotional performance, based on the real testimonies of women who survived the Holocaust, left no one in the audience indifferent. The play draws on real human stories collected by the authors of the “Black Book,” Ilya Ehrenburg and Vasily Grossman — one of the most important documentary testimonies to the tragedy of the Holocaust.

Throughout the performance, the audience followed the heroine through tragic trials, the pain of loss, fear and despair, but at the same time through faith, love and an unbreakable determination to live. Olena Shavruk’s acting was particularly impressive. Her transformations were truly remarkable: with nothing more than her voice, gaze and gestures, she created an entire world of characters and human stories.

The performance gave the audience not only a powerful artistic experience, but also a reminder of the importance of memory, humanity and our responsibility to history.

We sincerely thank Olena Shavruk for this deeply moving evening and everyone who shared it with us at the World Club of Odesites.
