About the event
On September 2, Odesa City Day, the name of Yevhen Mykhailovych Holubovskyi will be added to the Walk of Stars — Vice President of the Worldwide Club of Odesites and an Honorary Citizen of Odesa.
He was born in Odesa on December 5, 1936. He would have turned 90 in December.
He founded our WCO newspaper, “Worldwide Odesa News,” and edited it for many years. He served as deputy editor of “Odesa Herald,” “Regional Herald,” and the “Deribasivska–Rishelievska” almanac. For more than ten years, he hosted the cultural television programmes “The End of the Century” and “The New Century.” He compiled and wrote forewords for more than twenty books, including “A Garland for Akhmatova,” “A Garland for Pasternak,” “A Garland for Mandelstam,” and the three-volume edition of Jabotinsky’s works. His final books were “Looking from Velyka Arnautska” and “My 192 Steps.”
But a formal list of positions says little about who he really was to Odesa. For more than ten years, he led the “Green Lamp” literary studio, which introduced the city to more than one notable literary figure. Young writers, poets, critics, artists and cultural scholars were always drawn to him, regarding him as an undisputed arbiter. At the Odesa National Scientific Library, where he served for many years as a member of the Academic Council, he was known as one of its longest-standing and most active readers — a man who literally could not live without books.
Yevhen Mykhailovych passed away three years ago, in August 2023. The Worldwide Club of Odesites and the Odesa National Scientific Library appealed to the Odesa City Council to have his name commemorated on the Walk of Stars, and on September 2, at 10:30 AM, on Lanzheronivska Street, his star will be unveiled.
Please join us to honour his memory.
